Orienteering Exercise: Run on simplification map

Key information
Exercise Type: Simplification
Target Level: Elite level, Junior level, Intermediate level
Intensity: Low
Preparation time: More than 30 minutes
OCAD Required: Yes
Min participants: 1

You get a map in which only the details which are needed for the orienteering are included. This exercise should be followed up with comparison of the full map and the simplified map, and an exercise where you shall draw your own simplification map.

Aim: Learn to simplify a complex map, pulling out the details which are needed for the orienteering. Often very instructive for the intermediate level / junior level, but also valuable for elite orienteers.
Variants: Instead of making a simplification map, it is also possible to mark all details which shall be used for the orienteering, e.g. with a small blue ring. It is also possible to let the runners draw their own simplification map - see exercise Draw simplification map.
Aids: OCAD is needed in order to remove all details which are not needed for the orienteering. See Tips on OCAD usage for how to make such a simplification map.
Terrain: Typically use terrain in which simplification is necessary.
Preparations: May be quite a lot of work to make the simplification map in OCAD.
Tips: It may be difficult to pick out the correct details for the simplification map.

A particularly good example of a good exercise on a simplification map is this training from the Jura region in France from the French Team WOC 2011 training camp of September 2010. The details to be used for simplification on each leg are shown within a circle drawn in the same color as the course. A very detailed terrain as this is a very good candidate for a simplification exercise.
