Orienteering Exercise: Line orienteering

Key information
Exercise Type: Contours, Map reading
Target Level: Elite level, Junior level, Intermediate level
Intensity: Low, Medium
Preparation time: Less than 5 minutes
OCAD Required: No
Min participants: 1

A line is drawn on the map, and the runner is to be on the line at all times. The difficulty of the exercise can be adjusted by varying the terrain, the intensity etc. It is best to use GPS for evaluation of the exercise.

Aim: The aim of the exercise is to learn accurate map reading, and be able to know where you are at all times. This exercise has some similarities to the Corridor orienteering exercise.
Variants: The line may be drawn on a normal map, on a contour-only map, etc. Part of the line may be straight-line segments (combine with the exercise Straight_line_orienteering) for compass training. Use of controls in the terrain within/outside the corridor which the runner shall spot and decide if are inside/outside may make it more entertaining for the runner.
Aids: No aids necessary - and very fast to make the training if a normal map is used.
Terrain: Any terrain will do, even street-o map.
Preparations: Draw a line on the map which the runner shall follow.
Tips: It is a good idea to know the terrain well enough to know that it is runnable. Use controls on the line / outside the line to make the exercise motivating for the runner.
