Orienteering Exercise: Book reading while running

Key information
Exercise Type: Map reading
Target Level: Junior level, Intermediate level, Beginner level
Intensity: Low, Medium, High
Preparation time: Less than 5 minutes
OCAD Required: No
Min participants: 1

The best orienteers read the map at close to maximum speed. They also have a high map reading frequency, i.e. they look at the map very often. Reading a book or a comic (or even a map) while running is a good exercise in order to train map reading frequency.

Aim: Learn to read the map in high speed. Increase map reading frequency.
Variants: Beginners can run slowly on a road with focus on map reading while running - higher level runners can run in the forest in high speed.
Aids: Map, book or comic required.
Terrain: Terrain depends on skills. Use a flat road for beginners, tougher terrain for more skilled orienteers.
Preparations: Find a book, a comic or other competition maps.
Tips: Combine this exercise with theoretical route choice training to get two exercises in one.
