Distance evaluation through step counting. Measure a distance on the map (e.g. 100 meters), and run the same distance in different terrain types and count your steps. Repeat until you get familiar with how many steps you need for a certain distance.
Aim: | It is important to know how far you have moved on the map when moving a certain distance in the terrain, especially when running in featureless terrain. Step counting is one method to know how far you have moved. |
---|---|
Variants: | You may use a GPS as an aid instead of measuring the distance on the map. See also GPS Distance evaluation for an alternative exercise where you build up your feeling for distance instead of using step counting. |
Aids: | GPS may be used as an aid (see under variants). |
Terrain: | Different terrain types should be tested. |
Preparations: | |
Tips: | It is important that you use competition speed when counting steps, as your step length will vary with intensity. |
