Orienteering Exercise: Micro

Key information
Exercise Type: Map reading, Simplification, Attackpoints, Map contact, Inside the control circle, Control description
Target Level: Elite level, Junior level, Intermediate level
Intensity: Medium, High
Preparation time: Less than 5 minutes
OCAD Required: No
Min participants: 1

A normal course is made, but for each control, there are several other controls within the control circle. There is no code on the controls, so the runner must decide which control is the correct one by studying the map and the control description. Some kind of penalty (penalty loop running, time penalty etc.) is given for each wrong control.

Aim: Train accurate orienteering all the way into the center of the control circle, and also train the identification of accurate attackpoints. This is also a very good map reading exercise. For the elite runner, the challenge is to simplify enough on the leg to be able to keep high speed on the legs.
Variants: Penalties can be done either using penalty loops or by adding a penalty time for each wrong control.
Aids: EMIT/SI should be used. For e.g. Ttime there is a module for micr-o.
Terrain: The map should be very accurate.
Preparations: Note that on the map, there is only a normal course.
Tips: To keep the effort down, it is sufficient to have only two controls within the ring for some controls - and none at all for others. The runners is still forced to orienteer accurately all the way into the center of the control circle. Penalty is easiest done using time penalties.
